The Spark Before the Fire: Signs You’re Outgrowing Who You Used to Be

TL;DR

When everything feels like it’s on fire—your job, relationships, identity—it might not be destruction; it might be transformation. These sparks of discomfort are often signs you’re outgrowing old versions of yourself (or, as my previous therapist called them, AFGO's: Another F**ing Growth Opportunity*). Change is messy, inconvenient, and sometimes terrifying—but it’s also where authenticity starts to rise. Trust the spark. You’re not falling apart—you’re becoming more you.

The World’s on Fire (and Maybe You Are Too)

Let’s be real: it’s hard to tell sometimes whether the world is burning down or we’re just personally combusting. Everything feels uncertain—politics, relationships, identity, even grocery prices. There’s this constant low hum of “What the actual hell?” in the background.

And in the middle of all that, maybe you’ve started to notice a different kind of spark. Something’s shifting inside you. Maybe it’s a whisper saying this doesn’t fit anymore.

That’s often the first clue that you’re outgrowing an old version of yourself.

When Life Hands You an AFGO

A former therapist of mine once called these moments AFGOs—Another F*ing Growth Opportunity.** (You can see why it stuck with me.) They’re the messy, uncomfortable in-between spaces where who you’ve been no longer feels quite right, but who you’re becoming isn’t fully formed yet either.

Think of it like trying to wear your favorite jeans after a growth spurt. You can technically still get into them, but breathing is optional.

Signs You Might Be Outgrowing Your Old Self

Growth doesn’t always arrive with trumpets and enlightenment. Sometimes it sneaks in through frustration, boredom, or that weird restless energy that keeps you up at night. Here are a few signs you might be in the middle of an AFGO:

  • Your “shoulds” start sounding suspicious. You catch yourself thinking, “I should be happy with this,” and immediately feel a pang of but I’m not.

  • You feel drained in spaces that used to light you up. The conversations, routines, or relationships that once felt grounding now feel like heavy sweaters in July.

  • You’re craving honesty, even when it’s inconvenient. You stop wanting to say what’s polite and start wanting to say what’s real.

  • Your body rebels. Anxiety, fatigue, or random aches might show up—your body’s way of saying, “Hey, we can’t keep doing this.”

  • You’re simultaneously terrified and excited. You catch yourself fantasizing about changes that scare the hell out of you—but also feel right in your bones.

If any of that sounds familiar, congratulations: you might be in the spark-before-the-fire phase. You’re not broken. You’re becoming.

When the World Feels Like Too Much to Transform In

Here’s the tricky part: trying to grow while the world itself feels like it’s perpetually on fire. Political tension. Climate anxiety. Social media outrage. It’s a lot.

It’s understandable to wonder, “Why can’t I just stay who I was? Why do I have to change now, of all times?”

But here’s the truth—growth isn’t something we can schedule for when life feels stable. It’s something that insists on happening in the middle of the chaos. The world might be burning, but sometimes that fire clears the way for something wildly authentic to grow.

Learning to Trust the Spark

Growth doesn’t always mean burning everything down. Sometimes it’s as subtle as asking new questions.

  • What if I don’t have to earn my worth?

  • What if love could feel easier?

  • What if I can trust myself, even when I don’t have all the answers?

These questions are the sparks that lead to transformation. Therapy, journaling, creative expression, and trusted relationships can all help you tend that spark—without letting it turn into a five-alarm fire.

The Phoenix Moment (You Knew This Was Coming)

The truth about transformation is that it’s rarely neat. It’s ash and smoke and shaky rebuilding. But eventually, there’s light again—your light, this time unfiltered and unapologetic.

So if you’re feeling the rumble of change, if life feels like one big AFGO—take a breath. You’re not losing yourself. You’re shedding what no longer fits so that the next version of you has room to rise.

Blunt, Gritty, and Sometimes Witty Takeaway: If it feels like everything’s burning, maybe that’s not destruction—it’s ignition. Trust the spark. You might just be outgrowing who you were meant to be.
